The Philosophy of Liberty

About

The Philosophy of Liberty (PoL) is a flash animation based of what is now the epilogue of Ken Schoolland's book, "The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible." It began in 1992 as a Russian translation of the book was being published. The publisher Dmitry Kostygin informed Ken that few people in Russia even knew what 'property' or 'taxes' were, and Ken responded by writing an introduction that described the philosophy of his book. It became so popular that it now appears as the epilogue in every language edition (40+ and counting), and it inspired Kerry Pearson (aka Lux Lucre) to turn it into a flash animation. Kerry passed away in 2004, however the animation has continued on, being translated into numerous new languages and converted to video to make it as easy to share with as many people as possible.

If you like The PoL, please share it with others. Make a DVD and play it for friends and family, submit it to video streaming sites, or share it any other way you can think of!

About the Video Formats

Original Adobe Small Web Format (.swf)
Shockwave flash is the original format that The PoL was created in by the late Kerry Pearson. Its very small filesize and perfect quality make it an easy way to view the PoL in an internet browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc. Just drag and drop the original swf version of the animation into a compatible browser and it should begin.

New Adobe .swf
The new swf version of the animation works differently from the original to allow new language translations to easily be inserted. However, it currently cannot simply be opened via a self-contained swf file. Accessing this version is available via url which passes various settings to the animation. For example:

http://www.jonathangullible.com/PoL/philosophy_of_liberty.swf?language=English&showmenu=1&playmusic=0&startchapter=5

Change the bold values to change the way the animation launches.

MPEG2 (.mpg)
Large filesize, high quality files. The original PoL swf files were initially converted to MPEG2 and the files should play in most media players. Files are about 200MB or about 100MB zipped.

DivX (.avi)

DivX is a compression format that shrinks down large MPEG files with very little loss in video quality. To view a DivX file on a computer, you must first have the DivX codec installed which can be downloaded for free at DivX.com. The DivX files are about 40mb, and the versions hosted at the Stage6 website are about 70mb.

Windows Media Video (.wmv)
Microsoft's format that shrinks large MPEG files into files with little loss of quality. Windows Media Player should have no problem playing these files.

MP4 (.mp4)

MP4 files are based on Apple Quicktime's container format. Of all video formats, it has the smallest filesize and lowest quality. However many portable video players such as iPod's can play these files.

DVD (.iso)

An .iso file is a duplicate image of a DVD. A DVD burning program such as Nero Burning ROM or Easy CD Creator can burn an .iso file in a way that an exact copy of the original DVD is produced. The resulting DVD should be viewable on most (but not all) DVD players.
